Standard balanced ventilation — intake at the eaves, exhaust at the ridge — works beautifully on a conventional attic with open air space from soffit to ridge. But not every home is built that way, and in our service area, manufactured homes present one of the most common ventilation challenges we encounter.
Here’s the problem: many manufactured homes are built with a center structural beam and vaulted ceilings. That construction means there’s no open attic cavity for air to travel through. Even when soffit intake exists at the eaves, the air has nowhere to go — the rafter bays are closed off by the vaulted ceiling below and the roof deck above, and there’s no path for that intake air to reach the ridge. Standard ridge vent or turbine exhaust simply doesn’t work in this configuration because the air can’t get there.
The solution is to treat each rafter bay as its own independent air space. We install one box vent per rafter bay on each side of the center beam — giving each isolated cavity its own exhaust point. It’s more penetrations than a standard installation, but it’s the only way to actually ventilate each bay rather than leaving them trapped and unventilated.
This is exactly why a thorough attic inspection matters before any roofing work begins. A manufactured home with vaulted ceilings looks like any other house from the outside. From the attic, it’s an entirely different ventilation problem — and the solution has to match the actual construction, not the assumption of what’s typical.
