A power vent — sometimes called a powered attic ventilator — is a motorized exhaust vent that actively pulls air out of the attic rather than relying on passive convection. Unlike ridge vents, box vents, or turbines, a power vent runs on electricity and moves a significantly higher volume of air.
We recommend power vents in specific situations — primarily when the architecture of a roof doesn’t provide enough surface area for passive venting to meet code requirements, or when the attic configuration makes it impractical to install enough passive vents to do the job correctly.
When we install a power vent, two components matter beyond the unit itself — the thermostat and the humidistat. The thermostat activates the vent when attic temperature reaches a set threshold, typically around 100 degrees. The humidistat activates it when attic humidity reaches a problematic level — which in Montana winters is just as important as summer heat management. A power vent without both controls isn’t doing its full job. We don’t install them without both.
